Today is my first social function at Vanderbilt. I went to several events with Jim at UIUC and they all went well, so I expect this will too, but I'm still a little bit nervous. I don't know why. I LIKE meeting new people, and if it's anything like the UIUC functions, they're just going to stand around talking about work anyway. :)

Because I'm not working right now (job starts July 9), I feel like all I have to talk about is wine and cooking. Fortunately, I met another Vandy library person on LJ, so there will be at least one other person I know there.

It's just a little departmental picnic. I plan to have a good time, at least once I get parking sorted out and a couple of people try my cookies. :)

i think what's hardest for me about those sorts of gatherings is guarding what i say - don't give away anything too personal, don't suggest that there's more to his life than science, blah blah blah. sucks feeling like you're on display and review against someone else's success!

but, wine and cooking? v. good things to talk about. :)

Heh. I will try not to over-share. I fear it is one of my flaws.

I used to be okay in social situations like that but now they make me so nervous!

Wine and cooking are very good topics of conversation. Also, what your partner does. Whenever I go to a national conference a million people ask me what he does. I used to choke up but now I write it on my hand.

Good luck! Let us know how it goes!

Oh, it's easy for me to talk about what Jim does. I copyedit his papers before he sends them for submission, and we're both tax geeks. At UIUC I was never asked that question because the law school people didn't really socialize outside of the law school, so everyone knew. Here they will ask me that though. Thanks for the tip!
